First Home Buyers

Owning your first home is more than just another purchase; it’s the start of a new chapter. While the journey may feel overwhelming, we're here to make it easy, understandable, and support you at every step of the way.

Empowering your home ownership journey

When buying your first home, there are lots of different things to consider. From finding the right property, to due diligence, negotiation, loan approvals, signing contracts, finding the right insurances and more, it can be a significant undertaking.

Our support and advice goes beyond just getting you a mortgage. We sincerely care about setting you up for the future, and we can guide you on all aspects of first home ownership. We’re on the pulse of the property market, we’re home owners ourselves, and we have deep knowledge about what’s happening in the local area.

We provide enough information to help you make informed choices, but not so much that you feel overwhelmed. And when you work with us, you get ongoing support for the life of your loan.

Tap into the right financial opportunities

There are a wide range of options available to help people buy their first home, but many people aren’t aware of what’s out there. These forms of financial help can make getting onto the property ladder much more accessible.

Here are some options to consider*:

  • Low deposit mortgages: not all lenders require a 20% deposit to secure your loan. We work with a range of providers, and can often get you into a home with less.

  • First home loans: this scheme, underwritten by Kāinga Ora, enables you to borrow up to 95% of the value of the loan.

  • Kiwisaver early withdrawal: if you’ve been contributing to Kiwisaver for at least 3 years, you may be able to put most or all of your savings towards your loan.

  • Kiwisaver HomeStart grants: you may be able to access up to $20,000 in grants that can go towards your mortgage and don’t need to be repaid.

  • Family assisted loans: if your parents have cash in the bank or sufficient equity in their property, this can often be used as security to serve as your deposit and reduce the amount of interest, without them being out of pocket. Click here to find out more about family assisted loans.

  • Property sharing: if the cost of a deposit and mortgage repayments is too much for one person, it is possible to co-own a house with multiple people to make it more accessible.

*Different criteria apply for each option. Please contact us to find out more.

Find out how much you can spend

Before you start making offers on properties, it’s important to get your mortgage application pre-approved. This way, you can:

  • Know the maximum budget you can spend.

  • Make your offer more attractive by not needing to be conditional on finance.

  • Go into open homes feeling more confident in what you can realistically buy.

Steps to success

Step 1

When you get in touch, we’ll arrange a time to meet (in person or online), get to know more about your situation, and provide some initial solutions to consider.

Step 2

When you’re ready to go ahead, we’ll onboard you as a client, collect all the documentation required, prepare your application, and work with lending providers to get your borrowing pre-approved.

Step 3

Once we’ve gained approval and you’ve found a suitable property, we will meet to select the best structure for your loan and submit it to the bank. Then we’ll work with the bank and your lawyer to get the deal completed for settlement.
